Seattle University Students Abroad Assaulted Over Red Hawk Hand Sign

09152012- Seattle University Freshman Move In day - Welcome Week

Several students studying around the world have been assaulted and in some cases badly injured for throwing up the classic red hawk hand sign. The acts of violence don’t seem to be tied to any one location, so it is not clear if the hand sign is being interpreted as a gang sign or just an offensive gesture. Students seemed unsurprised by the news. “I often feel an urge to hit people throwing up that stupid hand sign” said SU senior John Cleesy. “So i’m not surprised this is a problem.” The school is advising the student body to stop “throwing up the hawk,” when not in the immediate campus grounds.
